JOB ESSAY

There are many definitions of the word ‘job’ but, to sum up, we can define ‘job’ as a combination of the manual and the intellectual skills.
Throughout history the concept of job has been changing up to nowadays. In ancient times the job was to meet people’s need. There were agricultural workers and farmers. Then, came the jobs related to craftwork such as pottery, blacksmith, etc. Later with the Industrial Revolution, people started to work in industries.
Today with the remarkable development of technologies, mobiles phones and mass media, new jobs related to the new technological revolution such as computer programmers, technical engineers and executives have emerged.
Nowadays, culture of the consumer society push up to improve the quality of live, working not only to survive but also to pay the mortgage, to repay the loan of the car, to travel, to go out, to go shopping… but the biggest problem in the XXI century is the unemployment that affects young and old people, men and women, and this situation is the same in every area of knowledge: employees, technicians, professionals (teachers, doctors,…), executives, etc.
These days about the 20% of the population in Spain is unemployed because of the economic crisis. Spain has also the highest unemployment rate of the university graduates. Young people begin to work later and the job conditions are unstable.
The fact that young people continue with the university studies delays their incorporation in the labor market. A large number of graduated people work on temporary contracts.
From my point of view, there is too much competition and we sometimes focus our efforts in getting a best curriculum, forgetting the family and the social life.
I think we should enjoy life more!

SUPERSTITIONS ESSAY

People have always had superstitions along history. Since ancient times, all societies have looked for several signals to answer their life experience. The influence of religion or creed, the witch doctors or witchcraft, or just the need to believe in something make people have superstitions.

Superstitions can be defined as irrantional beliefs, especially with regard to the unknown, all things that are not based on reason or knowledge. Some superstitions can be called “old wives’ tales”, because someone thinks they are silly things. Normally they are applied to beliefs and practices surrounding luck, prophecies and spiritual beings.

Superstitions can be similar in different countries, but sometimes the same object can have a different meaning. For example, in Britain meeting a black cat means good luck, while in Spain this means bad luck.

Superstitions can be related to folklore rituals as Black Magic or Wodoo. In other times it was related to astrology, foods or animals. Nowadays, at the age of science there are still people who believe that superstitions can influence our lives. What do you think?

LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE ESSAY

Nowadays, people want to learn a foreign language. In Spain many people learn English, because if you know English, you can get a better job. And if you Know English, you can travel all over the world, because you don’t have problems to communicate with anybody.

Spanish people study English in the official school of languages or in an academy. But they need a lot of time to learn English.
On the other hand, kids start to study English when they are three years old. When they finish school, they are able to read and write in English, but they can’t speak it and they don’t understand English when they listen to somebody.

What is the problem? In my opinion, the problem is that they don’t need to speak English in Spain in their usual life. In their education, they have to learn English, but this isn’t enough. Not only should the Government include English lessons in primary schools or high schools, but also include English programmes in the Spanish television. And kids should practise oral English, because in a language the most important thing is communication.

So, the question is: If in Spain you need a lot of time to learn English or another language. How is the best way to learn a foreign language?
I think, if you want to learn a foreign language, you can travel to a place where people speak this language. When you need to go to the supermarket or the cinema, or you need to buy tickets to travel by bus or train, or you want to go to the restaurant... you need to speak English, and you will learn English. I’m sure!

But, not only you learn a new language, but you also know a new culture, new customs, a new country, and you meet other people.... and you are also more independent and these things will be good for you.

In conclusion, if you want to learn English, you should travel to England.
What do you think about this?

SHOPPING ESSAY

I like going shopping, especially in the sales, because you can find a lot of special prices. But there are some questions related to going shopping that I don’t like. The first thing is:
When I find a bargain, I feel strange. On the one hand, I’m happy to find something cheap, but on the other hand, I think “this is the real price for this thing, so I have paid too much for this thing all the year!” Another question related to this is: when I see, for example, a lot of trousers very cheap but nobody has bought them, I think “this is very suspicious”!
The second question is that in the sales, all the shops and the shopping malls are full of people and you must do long queues! For this, I prefer the second or the third sales, because there aren’t a lot of people and the fitting rooms are empty!
And the third question is: I don’t like the consumer atmosphere that there is in the sales. This is because, when you see a good bargain, you don’t think if you really need it, you only think: “it‘s cheap! I have to buy it!”
Nowadays, we have another possibility to buy: we can shop online. On the one hand, this is good because it is very fast and easy, because you can buy without leaving your home. But, on the other hand, you must be careful with your credit card, because, if the website isn’t safe, somebody can copy your information and buy with your money!
Finally, I want to talk about an illness related to go shopping: the compulsive buyer. These people have an addiction and they buy a lot of things that they don’t need and spend a lot of money with this.
And now, I would like to ask you: what do you think about shopping online, sales and the consumerism?

CHOOSING A HOUSE ESSAY

There’s no doubt that choosing a house is a big decision and you want to do it rightly.
A house is a shelter but a home is far more. It’s where you live, relax, entertain friends, bring up families and work. A home is where you spend much of your life, and so choosing a house is an enormous decision.
We need to think of several things before buying a house. For example, it isn’t the same to be single or to have a family. In each situation the needs change.
I think that living in a flat has a lot of good things because you can clean it faster and it can be very cosy. We have neighbours and we can count on them.
On the other hand, the walls in a flat are usually very thin and unfortunately you can listen to your neighbours. You have to respect them because living in a community means that there should be some rules to be respected, such as not to make noise after 10 pm or not to use any electric appliances at night.
In conclusion, I think living in a flat has more disadvantages than advantages but it’s a cheaper option than a detached house.
Nowadays a lot of people are living in big cities because it is very comfortable, as you can find everything you need in everyday life very quickly. But too many people cannot live there because there aren’t enough places for everybody.
People have to live squashed in high buildings.
For me it’s very stressful. I prefer to live in a house in a town or in a residential area because I have a lot of space to park my car, it’s a relaxing place, I can have my own garden, my child has a lot of space to play and it’s safer. Besides, when we need to buy something in the city I take my car and in twenty minutes I am in the city.
Houses in towns or in a residential area are usually bigger than a flat. Sometimes you have a garden and all the rooms have lots of space. I think that this kind of life is healthier.
You have more privacy in one’s home as your neighbours are farther than in a flat and you can feel freer.
What do you think about this?

POSITIVE THINKING ESSAY

Hi, everybody!
Now I’m telling you about POSITIVE THINKING.
First I’m explaining you there are two kind of people: optimistic and pessimistic people.

A pessimist is a person who nurtures a consistently negative attitude, expecting the worst of people and of situations. A pessimist relates to the “half empty glass,” ignoring the fact that the glass is also half full. He or she typically believes that the world in which we live is the worst possible of all worlds and it is growing bleaker all the time.

An optimist is a person disposed to take a favorable view of things.
Besides, researches made along tens of years revealed that optimistic people have a better health, and live longer. Optimistic people are also more resistant to stress and less prone to depression.

So, I think it is interesting to know:

How to be a more positive person
Positive thinking is when you put out a deliberate effort to act and think in an optimistic way. When you think positive you see the best in things and expect a successful conclusion. Positive thinking brings about positive actions. You will complete things faster, do a superior job, have more success, and be a happier and healthier person by being positive.

Here are six things that you can do to improve your positive thinking and help you feel better about yourself.
1 - Motivate Yourself
Everyday. Being productive will help you build self-confidence and make you feel better about yourself.

2 - Think Positive
Positive thinking brings about positive actions. Do not go into things thinking you are going to fail. Go into everything thinking you will succeed and do a good job.

3 - Do Your Best
Always approach everything with energy and enthusiasm and do the best job that you can. When you do your best, you will feel better about yourself.

4 - Leave the Past Behind
Remember past successes and leave past failures behind. When you focus on your successes, you boast your self-confidence. When you focus on past failures you belittle yourself and make yourself feel inadequate.

5 - Project Self Confidence and Energy
By projecting confidence and energy you help others to do the same. By sharing your optimistic attitude, you increase your own.

6 - Make Positive Thinking a Habit
By taking the time every day to focus on all the positive things in your life, you develop the habit of thinking more positive and being an overall more optimistic person. Start each day and each new endeavour by reminding yourself how truly great you are. Only by having faith in yourself will you reach your true potential.

As a result, I think it is better to be an optimistic person.
Are you an optimistic or a pessimistic person?

COMMUNICATION TODAY ESSAY

In the last decades the ways people use to communicate between them are changing quickly. In only one century we have changed from letters and telegraph to mobile phones and social networks. It’s true that the communication nowadays is faster than before. We know whatever thing that happens in wherever place immediately. Nowadays we have more technology than never before to improve our communication, but it’s true too that this doesn’t mean necessarily that now we communicate better than before. I’m going to explain some examples.
Today it’s difficult to find somebody that doesn’t use mobile phone. This little gadget allows us to speak with everybody when we want and from wherever place. It isn’t only used to speak, but also, to send photos, messages or e-mails, to look for on the Internet or even to watch TV programmes. It helps us in difficult situations but to tell the truth we have paid a price for that. We have lost a piece of our freedom. Now we have the obligation to be located for our boss, family ... all the time. There is a big alarm if you don’t answer or return the call immediately.
In the same way the Internet has invaded our lives to make communication easier and cheaper. We can chat and swap information with people around the world. It’s a fact that we live in the global village. However it isn’t less true that we spend a lot of time chatting in the networks with people we will never meet and we don’t talk with people that are in the same place while we wait for the doctor, for the bus or we are in a queue. We are too much busy with our mobiles phones.
Other consequence about the near relation between communication and technology is that we are forced to be learning constantly about the new technologies. And that takes a lot of our free time. Besides, to young people (and not so young too), it is necessary to belong to a network like Facebook or Twitter. These days if you don’t are in some of them, you don’t exist. And moreover now it is in fashion to have a blog that you must update frequently. All that things are fantastic and really interesting but the problem is that they take our time off.
In my opinion, people are so interested in communicating using the new technologies that we are losing our social abilities for the communication face to face. I think we should include the new technologies in our lives but don’t let them replace the satisfaction to connect with the emotions and other feelings that you can see when you talk face to face.
What do you think about?

EATING HABITS ESSAY

Nowadays we live fast. We always go running to everywhere. We are really busy, we work, we have children, we do housework, we study and we have an intense social life.
We don´t have enough time for us and finally we have bad eating habits because it is faster to cook a hamburger than to cook a good stew. It is faster to eat a sandwich than to eat a big salad.
A lot of times we need to eat out and fast food is cheaper or we often go out with friends and we eat too much and we drink alcohol.
Also, in these days, there are all kinds of food in the supermarkets, food with a lot of fat like pizzas, chocolates, ice-creams, cakes, buns or chips. Fifty years ago in Spain it was difficult to find this type of food, but now it´s easy and not very expensive. Young people like this type of food very much. But they are consuming a lot of calories in a few grams. And they can become overweight.
On the other hand, at present we have more information about what´s better to eat or what´s worse to eat. There are advertising campaigns about eating five (fruits and vegetables), fish, low calories food, etc. And the last campaigns in the schools about eating clementine oranges.
In conclusion, eating habits are really important for our health. We decide to have bad or healthy eating habits.

RENEWABLE ENERGY ESSAY

The International Energy Agency explains: Renewable energy is energy which comes from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, water and geothermal heat, which are renewable (naturally refilled). Taking into account its origin we can distinguish between:
-Solar energy: is the energy derived from the sun through the form of solar radiation. We usually use solar cells.
-Wind power: Areas where winds are stronger and more constant are preferred locations for wind farms.
-Hydropower: energy in water can also be used (oceans, dams, etc).
-Biomass: it comes from plant materials.
-Biofuel: it is usually either bioalcohol such as bioethanol or oil such as biodiesel.
-Geothermal energy: it is obtained from the heat of the earth.
Renewable energy replaces conventional fuels in four distinct areas:
1.Power generation: renewable energy provides 18% of total electricity generation worldwide. Renewable power generators are spread across many countries and wind power alone already provides a significant share of electricity in some areas. In fact, some countries get most of their power from renewable energies.
2.solar hot water heating systems: Most of these systems are installed on multi-family apartment buildings. Worldwide, total installed solar water heating systems meet a portion of the water heating needs of over 70 million households. The use of biomass for heating continues to grow as well. Direct geothermal for heating is also growing rapidly.
3.Transport fuels: Renewable biofuels have contributed to a significant decline in oil consumption in the USA since 2006. The 93 billion litres of biofuels produced worldwide in 2009 displaced the equivalent of an estimated 68 billion litres of gasoline, equal to about 5% of world gasoline production.
4.Rural energy services.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SPAIN
Renewable energies in Spain represented 12% of total energy generation in 2009. Spain has set the target of generating 20% of its energy needs from renewable energy sources by 2020. Some autonomous regions in Spain lead Europe in the use of renewable energy generation in a few years.
Spain is the third biggest producer of wind power, after the USA and Germany, with an installed capacity of 16,740 megawatts at the end of 2008. More than the 11% of Spain’s electricity came from wind power in 2008. The largest producer of wind energy in Spain is Iberdrola.
In 2005 Spain became the first country in the world to require the installation of photovoltaic electricity generation in new buildings, and the second in the world to require the installation of solar hot water heating systems. Spain was also the first country to ever have a commercial solar energy power tower (it is located near Sevilla).
What use do you do of energy? Do you use renewable energies?

SPORTS AND LEISURE ESSAY

In this society we live very quickly due to our hard work. So we want to take advantage of leisure. But, what is the meaning of this word? Leisure is the time that people spend with themselves without producing anything.
Nowadays our leisure is very important for us. For this reason there are several websites about activities to do in our free time, town councils have leisure programmes, there are Leisure animation courses... These resources are a way to organize the free time. I think these activities are sometimes good when you don’t know what to do.
On the other hand leisure is closely related to sport. In fact a lot of people spend their free time playing sports because they can’t play sports daily. I think this is a good option. Experts say to do sports is very good because when we do sport we forget about these thoughts that concern us (our worries) and our whole body is relaxed. Maybe this is the best way to separate our work from our life because we stop thinking about the daily work tasks. I think sharing our free time with our friends and family is also important because we can’t spend a lot of time with them.
For these reasons our leisure and the sports need to be supplemented in order to enjoy them. We can do many sports like: going for a walk, running, riding a bike, playing chess... In addition we can share the free time and fun with our friends and family.
In my opinion to do something in our leisure is important. There are a lot of options: going to the cinema, shopping, listening to music, reading a book, doing exercise... but the most important thing is not to waste our free time because it is a treasure.
No doubt, in our leisure time we can do what we like. For me, relaxing during my free time, doing sports or reading a book are the best options.
If you had free time what would you do?

MEANS OF TRANSPORT ESSAY

Along History, people have had the necessity and the curiosity of moving and changing from some places to others, and in this sense means of transport have played an important role.
Nowadays, there is a great variety of means of transport and all of them have advantages and disadvantages.
When we have to choose a mean of transport we usually take into account distance, speed, comfort and cost.
But I would like to focus the discussion on transport in our cities and the question is: What do you think is better: to use public or private transport?
Regarding private transport, I think that the car is the king. Cars provide autonomy and they are seen as being more convenient and reliable. They also provide access to more destinations than public transport. Besides, in another way, cars are seen to confer prestige and other socially desirable attributes.
But, on the contrary cars are expensive to support. Owing a car means spending a lot of money in a garage, an insurance, fuel (petrol) and tax. In addition, the main problem is that cars pollute very much and this is a problem which affects us all, car owners and non-car owners.
In opposite of this, I think that nowadays we can find very modern public transports as the tube, the tram, High Speed Train which are more ecological; they use less energy and make easier the traffic through the cities, among other advantages.
Besides, in modern cities, bicycles are being introduced as a public transport because they are more efficient than some public transports in some conditions, as speed, flexibility and energy saving.
But I wonder, is public transport really cheaper and more efficient? Is it promoted enough by governments?
We should think about this, because it seems a contradiction.
If you have seen the last news in Madrid, Barcelona and other big cities, the governments are asking people to use public transport because the level of pollution is very high. But, on the other hand, governments promote the sale of cars because they consider it is necessary to help car industry because of the economical crisis.
So what do you think?

EDUCATION ESSAY

I’m going to talk about education. What is education? Answering this question is not easy because everybody has a different point of view of what education is.
Education is a process through which humans assimilate and learn knowledge, rules and ways of being that govern our society. There are three types of education: formal, non formal and unofficial. Formal education refers to the education provided by a school, a high school or a university; non-formal education refers to the education that is achieved in academies, courses… and unofficial education refers to the education that is acquired thanks to the experiences in life.
I think that education nowadays is suffering horrible changes. Few years ago, parents supported teachers’ decisions, but now, teachers have no authority because parents believe their son’s version and not the teacher’s version when there are academic problems.
Education is a right, so I think that it is very important to prepare the human beings to be able to face the obstacles in life, and it makes them able to transmit to the world the knowledge that they have acquired along their life.
In conclusion, education is an art consisted of science, love and lots of patience.

FASHION ESSAY

In the following essay, I’m going to talk about fashion.

It’s really difficult to give a definition about the word “Fashion”; the dictionary explains it as the passing use that regulates, depending on the likes of that moment, the way we dress up, live, etc…

I definitely agree with this, even though I think fashion is more than just that; people express themselves by means of fashion. The way someone dresses, lives or acts, can tell you a lot about them and I’m sure that’s the main reason why we normally judge people at first, only by their appearance and most of the time this causes us to have a wrong opinion about someone.

Clothes can be casual, smart, stylish, comfortable, sophisticated or uncool, old-fashioned, colourful…

Fashion world can be complicated.

Clothes can sometimes provoke a strong reaction. For example, baggy clothes are associated to criminals and designer clothes (Armani, Tommy, Calvin…) are associated to rich people.

Nowadays, it’s fashionable to have a personal shopper who can buy the latest model or exclusive designs for you if you don’t have time to go shopping.

But I enjoy shopping my own clothes.

ENVIRONMENT ESSAY

I don’t know what are the reasons about the changing climate maybe...
- Traffic
- Nuclear pollution
- Rubbish
- Industrial and factory pollution
- Disasters at sea
Most scientists now believe that pollution in the air is warming up the Earth’s climate. Gases such as carbon dioxide act like a sheet of glass above the Earth trapping the sun’s heat and making the air warmer than usual. This is called the greenhouse effect.
But, who knows? And I ask myself “What can I do?”
I think I can do lots of things, for example:
-Using renewable energy from the sun (solar panels), from de wind (windmills), from the sea.
-Recycling. In all towns we have special containers where we can separate paper, glass, cans... from general rubbish.
Going on foot, cycling or taking public transport (bus, tube,...) instead of my own car.
There are also several organisations like Friends of the Earth or Greenpeace who work preventing the earth’s natural resources; they try to educate people about the problems of the Earth in the future.
And now, I would like to ask you: what are you doing to save the environment at home, at work or school?

LEARNING MORE ESSAY

Nowadays it is very important to learn during our professional life because science and technology change quickly in the global society.
Governments and private academies give us a lot of opportunities to do it. You can learn about different subjects: languages, maths, history, biology, computers, etc. Besides, you can also have a lot of ways to keep learning: seminars, conferences, training courses, e-learning or blending courses.
In addition, currently we have computers in our home and this situation is ideal to organize your learning time.
On the other hand, new technologies, like Internet, allow us to do video conferences, to chat, to exchange opinions in forums and it is not necessary to assist to on-site lessons (with partners and teachers).
In conclusion, learning is now easier for adult than years ago because we have a lot of options and adults pupils are more motivated than younger ones and they understand why something is important to know or to do.

WELCOME TO OUR ENGLISH CORNER

Hi everybody,

Welcome to our new English corner. As we are going to exchange a lot of information and ideas along the course, I thought that a blog could be very useful. We can use it as a 'meeting point' outside the classroom.

First of all, I'm going to post both the words and the essay about 'Learning more'.

During the week, I'll try to post the other topics.

Best wishes,

Susi.
